Strange Epiphany, possibly brought on by the heat and packing
I woke up this Sunday morning around 9, sleeping later since I haven't been sleeping well, and pottered upstairs so I could start my little morning routine: start coffee, grab the paper, pour some cereal, slice some peaches, settle in to read news, blogs, and emails. (Yes, Megarita is currently single. But really, this particular routine is rarely altered at my house. Just delayed a bit.)
I had a strange moment when I realized it was Sunday. I said to myself, seemingly out of nowhere, "god, I hate brunch."
I said this somewhat muffledly, since I was cramming my craw with a mixture of cheerios, grape nuts, and peaches. But I mean it. There have been so many Sundays when I've had to wait until 11 am or something godawful to eat breakfast because of brunch. Then you have to stand in line, still pre-caffeinated way after the time limit--which results in a sleepy headachy feeling that cannot be rectified after a certain hour--and wait for people to eat their foods, which are neither lunch nor breakfast. No, I do not want eggs benedict and a bloody mary. I want a burger and a beer, for god's sake. It's 1 pm! And a burrito crammed with eggs and peppers is not breakfast. It's odd and tastes funny and makes me feel sickly.
I'm a breakfast girl. In the summer I live on cereal and fruit or maybe yogurt, but in the cooler months I'm the queen of whipping up some scrambled eggs with cheese, some pancakes, a helping of french toast, some bacon or sausage, or even some crepes if I'm feeling fancy. And I make delicious breakfasts! (Except for fried eggs. I stink at those. But they're nasty, so too bad.) I'll even eat random stuff like the British baked beans and tomato and bangers and mash and happily snarf it down. The difference between this and brunch? I can eat it by 9 am.
So is this just me? I have no idea why this huge antipathy just washed over me this morning, but I am a brunch hater. I wake up ravenous in the morning, usually around 8, almost always by 9, and I need to be fed and watered immediately. I can even go back to bed afterwards, but there's a moment when I need some brekkie. Several boyfriends had to actually invest in little coffee percolators just to make sure I didn't kill them by accident in the morning. (A few, sadly, offered me tea. I had to kill them and then hide the evidence, all before breakfast.)
In other news, packing begins today for the latest move and I have to get back in the classroom later this week. So this anger? Really not about the brunch. Not totally. But somewhat.

Perhaps this would alleviate your anti brunch feelings?
I like brunch occasionally. Granted, I tend to be an early-ish bruncher (10-11ish) and use it merely as an excuse to drink mimosas and get tanked earlier in the day that is normally acceptable.
I love breakfast. If you don't feed me breakfast on the weekend then I'm cranky.
I'm the one who will go ahead and order lunch while at brunch. There have been few, few exceptions.
I loved the video.
I kinda love brunch. But that's because I'm lazy, don't drink coffee, and don't get hungry right when I wake up.
Today for my houseguest I made breakfast sandwiches of scrambled eggs, bacon, and melted pepper jack on Grands biscuits. I felt proud. :)
JB--"Nothin' beats Sunday afternoon inebriation." Nice meter! Maybe if I focused on the drinks and less on the eggs.
MA--Right-o
MG!--Damn. That sounds pretty damn good. But no coffee? I thought we were friends . . .
I try not to judge MG! and her lack of coffee. I don't always succeed.
I love brunch purely for the bloody mary (coffee has to have occurred prior though - I can't go from coffee to bloody mary back to coffee). And I think a place that serves good Fritatas is just about perfect.
GSR--I had no idea about this lapse in MG!'s character. It's sent me reeling.
But see? The frittata (sp?) kind of makes me throw up a little in my mouth. I'm not sure what I'm missing. But you go on ahead there . . .
Pig parts, pancakes and french toast? I want to eat winter breakfast at Megarita's.
The full-on burro is not a good plan for breakfast. Adding superfluous beans and salsa just for the sake of burrito-ness is not my cup of tea. I go with my regular egg scramble thing and throw it in a tortilla. Although I ocassionally dice up some ham and mash an avocado to make a green eggs and ham scramble thing.
66--There's always room for you at my table.
Claven--I'm not sure how I missed the boat on this "scrambler" thing. I don't even love omelettes, to be totally honest. I think I have a very wobbly relationship with eggs.
Well said, and I thought I was the only one that loathed brunch. I never eat enough to justify the cost, and like you, I hate the later hour. A nice touch..I was eating a white peach while I read this. ;)
i flippin love that you said brekkie. im like you, i wake up and im freaking HUNGRY and need food pretty much on contact. i like brunch type foods, but i just wish the whole timing of it all was different.
Cube--This pleases me. I'll meet you for a croissant and latte at the crack of dawn sometime!
Brooke--I'll make a diminutive out of about anything, I fear.
